Mike Riffey
A fitting start to our new members’ spotlight page is about one of our recently retired members, Mike Riffey. Mike retired with thirty-three years of service and held the office of recording secretary.

Mike was involved in training and really enjoyed working to make sure employees were trained properly. He took training very seriously, or at least as serious as Mike could be, and he always tried to give his coworkers the tools they needed to do their jobs better.

In late 1998, Kellogg was closing the South Plant and firing many employees. People were feeling betrayed and couldn’t understand how this could happen. Out of this frustration, a new voice was heard.  That voice was The Troubled Times, a newsletter and website that Mike was writing for that really gave the employees something to talk about.  I bet you all can remember The Troubled Times “FACT OR FICTION.”

Mike’s writing for The Troubled Times laid the groundwork for his being asked to run for the recording secretary office.  He was a natural choice and immediately made an impact on the job. His writing skill and wit were used to the fullest as he composed and edited a lot of the content for The Local 3G BCTGM Reporter. We have all laughed at the comics Mike put in the newsletter. What many don’t know is that Mike donated countless hours to publishing that newsletter.

I asked Mike what plans he has for retirement.  He looked at me with that smirk I’ve seen many times, grinned, and said, “Whatever I want for as long as I want”.

Over the years Mike was involved in helping people any way he could.  His friendly smiles, dedication, and sense of humor are some of the things we will all miss.  Thanks, Mike. We all wish you a long healthy and happy retirement.
